Hannah, 12 years old, Mediastinal B-Cell Lymphoma
During the initial meeting with Hannah and the Make-A-Wish team, it was clear that Shortland Street was very important to both Hannah and her mum. The show was a way for them both to spend time together and enjoy the many storylines and see what the characters got up to in each episode. A weeknight staple for Hannah and her mum, and a welcome distraction as she battled her disease, the gruelling treatments and the worry and stress.
Hannah is something of an expert on Shortland Street - she knows all the characters, and her favourites are Dawn (because she's "cool and quirky"), Nicole and Vinny.
When Hannah found out she was travelling to a big city like Auckland she was excited. On the morning of her wish, Hannah and her family were given the VIP treatment - they travelled by limousine to the set of Shortland Street, a hospital set in Auckland's West.
During her visit, Hannah was surprised by three of the shows main characters, Nicole, Dawn and Damo, who sat with her to have lunch. Hannah let out a little shriek of excitement when she saw the cast coming to join her table.
Hannah was taken on a special tour around the studios and got photos with almost everyone! The Shortland Street team were amazing and made Hannah feel very welcome – they all had big smiles! Hannah even got to watch a live scene being filmed! A day she and her family will treasure forever.
