Rachael's Make-Up Wish

18-year-old Kiwi Rachael Cox is just like most teenage girls her age – she simply adores makeup.

Rachael who has Cystic Fibrosis told Make-A-Wish New Zealand that her one true wish was to visit a makeup factory to see how makeup was made.

Thanks to the support from our partner, the Bayleys Foundation, Make-A-Wish New Zealand was able to make Rachael’s one true wish a reality.

In late-June, Rachael and her mother Camilla flew to Melbourne to visit Karen Murrell’s natural lipstick production facility. Rachael believed she was simply visiting to see how lipstick was made, but the Karen Murrell team had something very special in store for Rachael, having woeked behind the scenes with Make-A-Wish New Zealand for weeks.

Rachael’s favourite colour had been pre-designed, and Rachael was able to see the production process of her very own special edition lipstick! The lipstick shade titled ‘Rachael’s Lipstick’ was then filled into Karen Murrell’s brand-new gold canister and even has her special new flower stencilled bullet and a graphic image of Rachael on the box.

Rachael, who is studying pharmacology and art at Otago University was overwhelmed with emotion when presented with ‘Rachael’s lipstick’.

“I was really excited about the idea of visiting a make-up factory. I love make up and interested in chemistry and I thought seeing the production would be hugely fascinating,” says Rachael who got to see a big vat of her lipstick being made.

“Everyone was so kind and so generous, it was beyond the reach of my imagination,” says Rachael who left with a bag of her own lipstick. “I want to thank everyone involved. It was a once in a lifetime experience.

“I thought it almost made it worth having cystic fibrosis – and I definitely say ‘almost’.”

New Zealand lipstick guru Karen Murrell was thrilled to be able to work with Make-A-Wish New Zealand to help make Rachael’s wish a reality.

“This was truly such a special day and seeing the look on Rachael’s face when she realised what was really going on was absolutely priceless and one that I will never forget,” she says.

Rachael’s favourite colour is a combination of purple and pink and the resulting lipstick shade is nothing short of perfect! “I really like the light purple, it has quite a cool pink undertone which makes it unique and fun” says Rachael.

The limited-edition lipstick is currently on sale via via Karen Murrell online and at makeup retailers around New Zealand and Australia.

All proceeds will be donated as a 50:50 split between Make-A-Wish New Zealand and Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand.
