Jacob, who has Gliomatosis Cerebri, loves everything to do with rowing and has been rowing for years with Tauranga Boys College. Even though Jacob has a brain tumour and is currently undergoing treatment, he still puts great effort into his rowing and was approached while in Twizel for selection for the regional under 21s rowing team.
Jacob’s mentor and inspiration, Toby Cunliffe-Steel, battled a similar condition as Jacob and now rows for the New Zealand rowing team. Toby helped to bring together a refurbished and personalised single rowing skiff for Jacob, which was presented to him at the Gallagher High Performance Centre at Lake Karapiro. Jacob’s parents kept the reveal a surprise, so Jacob was completely blown away with his new skiff and was so excited that he even tested it on the water! Jacob now continues to train towards his dream of rowing for New Zealand.
